I must be growing more oblivious to the obvious, as I hadn't recognised the 
similarities between "Ring" and "Kairo".  Nice spotting.  I believe 
Kurosawa was offered the chance to direct "Ring" sometime before Nakata 
Hideo, but it never panned out.  I think he referred to Nakata as his 
"kouhai".  
Despite having said that, they are two very different movies.  I still have 
a sneaking suspicion that Kurosawa had his tongue firmly planted in cheek 
when he said that he was aiming the movie at 15 year-olds.  Besides, all 
the talk about Kairo not being suited for Cannes was pre-empted by the 
director himself, remarking that he never made it with the intention of 
having it screened there in the first place.  I suspect it had more to do 
with the high esteem in which his movies are regarded in Europe.
