For those of you in Japan, the documentary Manzan Benigaki will be
showing with English subtitles at Athenee Francais on November 2
(Friday). This record of growing red persimmons in Kaminoyama, Yamagata,
was begun by the famed director Ogawa Shinsuke in 1984, but had to be
shelved upon Ogawa's death. The Chinese director Peng Xiaolian, who had
become quite close to Ogawa in his last years, helped finish the film
with new footage shot in 1999. In some ways Ogawa's "Last film", Manzan
Benigaki was the opening film of this year's Yamagata International
Documentary Film Festival.
Screening times are 13:30, 16:30, and 19:00. The film is about 90
minutes long.
