This is a bit late, but the papers reported that Miyazaki Hayao's Sen to
Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away) has broken the attendance record
for a Japanese film. As of the 10th, attendance reached 14.77 million,
breaking the record of 14.2 million set by Miyazaki's Mononoke hime.
Since Mononoke attracted a more adult audience, who pay higher ticket
prices, Sen has still not broken the box office record for a Japanese
film set by Mononoke (though that should be broken in a week or two).
Sen, however, has reached the attendance mark in only 7 weeks, compared
the 27 it took for Mononoke.
