Waseda

The Waseda Engeki Hakubutsukan library is fantastic. They have basically
open access to everything (I'm sure there are things kept for
safe-keeping, but I've never been denied access to anything I've asked
for). There is a card catalog and computer database. I'm not sure if the
database can be accessed from off-campus. Unlike the main library at
Waseda, you just waltze in and start working. They also have a small
reference section with what you would expect: the indexes that are out
there, filmographies, partial runs of major magazines like Kinejun.

One thing few people realize is that they also have some special
collections that are indexed and available for research. They include
personal collections by directors and actors. I recently used the 9,000
scripts of voice actor Wakayama Genzo (aka Bond, the Connery Bond) for
research on dubbing in Japan.

Perhaps as important as the holdings: they have nice copiers on site to
copy away like a madman/woman and take things home for perusal.

Considering the lack of access to the film center, Waseda is a very
precious place.
