dear all,
my impression unfortuneatly having seen only half of Pistol Opera when it screened in the Cannes market in May (due to a darn meeting the couldn't be moved) was that it is was a truly brilliant film, but also violently anti-filmic.
Pushing his aestetics to an extreme but also cutting back and forth between real landscapes, okay looking backdrops and screens resembling a theater stage, Suzuki succeeds in both making Brechtian illusionbreaks but also paying great respect to a long tradition of anti-realistic films that before this culminated in Fassbinder's likewise brilliant Querelle.
