I do not know how in other countries, but here in Norway they are quite
available. I bought myself SONY DVP-NS 300 player, which was "officially"
region 2 player, but it took only few seconds for the seller to make it
regionfree with some special remote control. Thus there is something going
on which might be called "double moral" --- official data differ from real
data and everybody seems to know that.
As far I have been able to see all kind of coded DVD-s without any
problems (included NTSC format). The only possible problem is that not all
TV sets do show NTSC format properly. However, most new ones do (both PAL
and NTSC color system).
As regards the fear for REA technology, I guess it is not going to
affect very much un-commercial films. And when all is said and done, the
technical world is changing fast anyway, and one cannot hope to keep the
same players for ever...
