the dvd-transfer of uplink is indeed awful and unforgivable. the video that
waizu-shuppan released in april 1997 has the original cinemascope-format. a
new 35mm print has been made on this ocassion and therefore the quality of
the video is pretty good.
uplink doesn't seem to care much for the films of its nippon erotics series
- wakamatsu's "joji no rirekisho" is also cropped to fullscreen. the
interview and other "extras" (if you can call them as such) are also rather
disappointing. instead of editing the interview with wakamatsu and adachi
they just chopped it in three parts and divided it evenly over the three
dvds.    
as much as i love the film(s) of yamatoya atsushi, i'd recommend not to
watch the dvd but to look out for the video.
