American movies in Japan

Do note that for broadcast TV, it is usually the dubbed version of 
foreign movies that is used. Cable and satellite TV are different (there 
subtitled versions dominate). I suppose it is due to some perception that 
subtitles would be hard to read for the average viewer, but now that most 
of the Japanese variety shows seem to subtitle half the Japanese 
dialogue, one wonders about the social and industrial conditions that 
shaped these practices.
