foul language in subtitles

Hello, and thank you all for your responses to my question. I had intended
my question to be a practical one, for example whether there's a little book
with self-censored "no-no" words (like the Japanese newpapers have). But
your responses have been a pleasant surprise. The objective of the subtitler
is indeed, to be "transparent" so that the viewer gets into the film.

I find that when I mouth the words as I am translating (I'm also an
interpreter), the text comes out differently. Even though the colloqial
feeling I achieve is not bad, sometimes the sentence gets too wordy, and I
don't like to see too many short words lined up in a line. I guess I'm
aiming for a sense of visual balance, kind of like how I would make sure
there are not too many kanji nor hiragana in a Japanese language subtitle.
Do English subtitle readers "skim-read" text, like in Japanese?
