A quick PS to the great list below: Joan Mellen has a chapter on
Ryoma-centered films in her "The Waves at Genji's Door" ('76), and that
might be a useful intro to some of the different titles made. Although not
exactly about Sakamoto Ryoma himself, Shinoda Masahiro's film "Ansatsu" 1964
is a hard-to-forget film about Ryoma's times, in which he figures but not as
the main character (they're friends), an interestingly different way to
experience Ryoma's character in film.
