When I'm in Japan I almost always make my purchases with credit card (some
shops have a minimum limit for using a cc. eg. 3,000-5,000 Yen) and have
never had any problems, whether buying DVD's, books, whatever. If it's a
small, privately owned shop selling something like movie posters then you
might need to pay in cash, but otherwise you can use a credit card pretty
much anywhere.
