TOUGH EYE-THE LARGEST FESTIVAL OF ANIMATED FILMS IN NORTHERN EUROPE, 14th
of May-18th of May 2003
TOUGH EYE International Turku Animated Film Festival is held for the
second
time from 14th to 18th of May this year. Tough Eye 2003 offers hundreds of
short animations from dozens of countries. International festival guests
will be arriving from as far as Switzerland and Japan.
This year the festival is divided into three categories:
Be Tough, Focus and Special.
Be Tough
Be Tough includes the only competitive category of the Festival, Timeless
Competition. Old and new walk hand-in-hand in the movie and jury-level.
Other categories of Be Tough include the New Finnish Animation that
presents new animated films from Finland, Kid?s Stuff and Turku Arts
Academy Presents that presents movies that have already won international
prizes.
Focus on Japan
This time the Focus-category has one theme: Japanese animation. Among the
several guests that will arrive from Japan is Koji Yamamura, whose works
will be presented in an extensive retrospective that includes the
Oscar-nominated animation Mt.Head. In additon to Koji Yamamura, Focus
Japan also offers Godfathers, and extensive presentation of the works of
the three "godfathers" of Japanese animation, Osamu Tezuka, Yoji Kuri and
Renzo Kinoshita. Focus Japan also includes the full-length animation
Metropolis that has gathered international appraisal.
2003 Special
Among the most important screenings of the Special-category of the TOUGH
EYE-festival is the Puppet animation Mire Bala Kale Hin?Tales from the
Endless Roads by Katariina Lillqvist. This series has six parts and is
based on the tales of the Romany people. The films will have their
premiere
in the TOUGH EYE-festival. In addition to all this, the Special-category
also offers French computer-animation, Norwegian cigarette commercials
from
the early 20th century and a retrospective on the works of the Swiss group
Killian Dellers who produce experimental animation.
TOUGH EYE 2003 also offers debates, an animation work-shop for children,
nightclubs and exhibitions. The main exhibition of TOUGH EYE presents
works
by the famous Roland Topor.
