dear list-members,

i'd like to inform you about the retrospective of this year's VIENNALE. it
is dedicated to the Art Theatre Guild of Japan (ATG), one of the most
important, if not THE most important japanese production unit between 1967
and 1986. from october 4th-29th the retrospective presents 33 films
produced and distributed by ATG, among them several films that are rarely
shown outside of japan (and even there). it took a huge effort to put the
programme together, but i think it is worth a travel to vienna in autumn.

a bilingual (german/english) catalogue will be published on this occasion.
it features several essays, introductions to the films of the programme as
well as a complete documentation of the activities of ATG.

moreover, hirasawa go, mark nornes, roberta novielli, max tessier, yomota
inuhiko and myself will further explore the changes that reshaped the
cinematic landscape in japan in the 1960s and early 1970s in an
international symposium on october 20th and 21st.

directors kuroki kazuo and wakamatsu koji as well as the legendary producer
kuzui kinshiro will also be present at the symposium and the retrospective.
i will post a detailed programme of both as soon as they are ready.
