Dear Kine-Japaners,

As a part of the Asian Film Festival 2003, the Center for East Asian Studies
at the University of Kansas will screen two Japanese documentary films, THE
NEW GOD and A. The description below is from the flyer we prepared for the
event.

The location is Spencer Museum Auditorium. Admission is free!

Feb. 21, 7:00 PM
The New God 1999, Japan, 99 min, documentary
Filmmaker Yutaka Tsuchiya attempts to delve beyond the political rhetoric
and intimidating facade of the complex figures of Karin Amamiya, lead singer
of the ultra-nationalist hardcore punk band, The Revolutionary Truth, and
guitarist/band-leader Hidehito Itoh.

Feb. 28, 7:00 PM
A 1998, Japan, 136 min, documentary
In the aftermath of the heinous crimes of September 1995, committed by the
religious group, Aum Shinrikyo, director Mori Tatsuya began an attempt to
understand and portray the group through a point-of-view independent of
media and the police investigation of the poison attack in a Tokyo subway.
Through interview and filming, behind closed doors, at the cult?s compound,
filmmaker and cult spokesman reveal the contradiction of purpose of both
men.

If you live close to Lawrence Kansas, please come to see the films!
