the yomiuri shinbun reports that the agency for cultural affairs (bunkacho)
plans an amendment of the national diet library law to make collecting and
preserving film prints mandatory. according to the plan this task will be
assigned to the national film center that should become an independent
institution (at present it is affiliated to the tokyo national museum of
modern art). the film center shall make copies of the films on video or in
digital form and set up facilities for visitors so they can watch the
movies. if it is really implemented that way many of us will profit a lot
from this plan, which seems to be another indicator of a more positive
attitude towards film by the japanese government and bureaucracy.
