In the fall of 2001 with the opening of Movix, Kyoto got its first true multiplex theater, complete with tiered comfy chairs and reserved seating. Another nicety was that the theaters were truly dark.  Before that all the theaters in town kept the overhead lights dimly on, enough to annoy me so that whenever I remembered, I brought a baseball cap to block out the light.

Does anyone know why this practice was followed and if there was any legal basis, has it been removed?
