One explanation I heard for this was related to the similarly annoying 
practice of allowing patrons into the theatre for the following screening 
before the previous one had ended. Lights were kept on to prevent filmgoers 
sitting on each other in the dark, and to help smokers as they staggered 
out to the lobby for a fix. It's probably just heresay, but it does make 
sense.
