V-cinema

I believe the practice of giving V-cinema product a very limited theatrical
run (usually in only one theatre in Tokyo and/or Osaka) became common in the
mid-90s. Essentially as a way to enhance the film's appeal and to mark it up
from being a simple straight-to-video release (and the image of cheap, quick
and sloppy filmmaking this conjures up in many people's minds).

Although these films can no longer purely be called Original Video, they are
most definitely made with the aim of recouping their money on video. The
theatrical release serves as little more than advertising for the video
release.
