What the writer says is, '[The new animations] represents the maturing
of a generation of westerners who sucked up the first wave of crossover
manga comics and anime films in the 1980s, and are now finding a way to
return their appreciation by directly sponsoring their creation.' Not
quite the same thing. The article itself mentions Cowboy Bebop, while
the Wachowskis have repeatedly referred to Ghost in the Shell, both '90s
titles. (For that matter, did Akira open in America before 1990?)
(At least this is a British article that uses a different tag from
'manga movies...'
