Ichikawa Jun's "Osaka Story" crops up occassionally on Yahoo! Japan auctions, as ex-rental VHS. The only subtitled version I've seen is in Chinese (pirated of course, not recommended:))

A Chinese-subbed copy would represent a huge advantage over a non-subbed copy for me...is this on DVD and if so any idea where it might be acquired?

Try the usual venues of Taiwanese pirate VCDs (auctions etc.) As I remember, Chinese sub glossed over dialogue and nuances of Kansai-ben. J-VHS isn't a huge handicap, if you consider the verbal almost defers to the cackle, commotion and aura of Osaka (gestures, visual and ambient sound.)

Google indicates it's been screened by cultural exchange programs. The distributor may have English-sub:
