Dear Listmembers,
Last night?s screening of the first program in the JPEX series was a great
hit. We had a sell-out crowd and an engaged Q&A session after the program.
I am circulating the program for tonight?s screenings below. Screenings
continue through Sunday. For details on Anthology Film Archives or the NYC
schedule, please see www.anthologyfilmarchives.org If you?re a
Kine-Japanner, please come say ?hi? after the show.
Yours,

JPEX: Japanese Experimental Film & Video, 1955-now
Program Two

In Exploded States, the importance of political and social critique for
postwar Japanese experimentation is made apparent. Here, Japanese
experimental film and video comes to its closest intersection with
experimental theater and avant-garde performance. The films draw from and
contribute to avant-gardist "happenings,? an intercontinental Fluxus
movement, and Hijikata Tatsumi's butoh dance. Viewed together, works by
Hosoe Eiko, Kawanaka Nobuhiro, and Terayama Shuji, among others, exhibit a
delightful irony and playful insubordination to state, collective, and
perspectival authority. Running time: 110 mins. Curation and notes by
Jonathan M. Hall and Michelle Puetz.
