ah ha a subject finally raised that i know something about!

I did my dissertation on the cultural clash present in Ringu and the Ring
between east and west. To me the original was all about the invasion of
technology into Japan and how is acted as a disease in the japanese ways of
life. The american version was good in its own rights when not held in
comparrison to its origin, but it seems that the main point to see is that
neither film lived up to the koji suzuki novel Ring, which he actually wrote
with the main theme being that of the love of a father for his daughter.
Then again, i dont think the film would have been such a hit if that film
was the domineering one really!

The two films are so different becuase they were made for two seperate
audiences who have grown and developed deiiferent styke of cinematic
readins, they react differently to codes and conventions as e would do. For
example, white in japan cinema represents death and moarning in our reading
it means clean and purity, and in japanese psychology the appearances of
overly long black hair signifys a daughters love for her father, in an
incest kind of way. Just some points to think on for you all.
