With Markus' categories in mind, I would go with Aaron's list but would swap
Yawanami for the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF),
which has played an enormous role in shaping the way people think about
documentary in Japan over the past decade or so, and is probably more
significant than many of the individual directors that I would love to see
included.
In addition to the aforementioned directors, a strong case could also be
made for articles focusing on "Personal documentary, Japan" (focusing on the
vast number of documentaries focusing on the director or the director's
family that have emerged since the mid-70s) and "Experimental documentary,
Japan" (which as a lump category could include not only the work of
Matsumoto, Suzuki, Oshima, and others but could give the writer space to
talk about the various experiments with documentary form that have taken
place in Japan over the past 100 years, especially in the 1960s). I would
also nominate Hani Susumu as yet another individual director worthy of
inclusion.
Is there any chance the list of topics could be increased from 10 to, say,
15?
