The 42nd Viennale Film Festival (October 15-27) has announced its program
and as in the previous years there will be a strong focus on Asian cinema.
After last year's ATG retrospective and previous tributes to Aoyama Shinji
and Yanagimachi Mitsuo, one of this year's specials is dedicated to Koreeda
Hirokazu. It is the largest retrospective of his works in the West so far,
including some of his early documentaries that are shown for the first time
outside of Japan. Koreeda will be present at the festival.
Other specials are dedicated to Jean-Pierre Gorin, Amos Vogel, Paul Fejor
and Lauren Bacall. In addition, a retrospective presents the complete works
of Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet plus two dozen films by John Ford
selected by Straub-Huillet. A special Midnight-program with the telling
title 'Fear East' presents a dozen recent genre films from East Asia. In the
main program China is strongly represented with 10 films.
