Film Identification query

Someone asked me about a film they wanted to identify -- but which rang no 
bells with me.  Here's their recollection of the film:

> A long time ago I saw a movie about a young man that works in a Kabuki 
theatre
> and is later found to be gay and at the end he is killed for being gay or
> persecuted by the his town, I can't remember. I think it was subtitled and
> it was in color so it could be between 50's and 80's? 

Anybody have any ideas?
