Edo period history

Dear Alex Jacoby,

I don't know if this would be helpful, but there is a good basic book in Japanese, Genroku no Shakai to Bunka. It's a social and cultural history of the Genroku Period, designed for general readers, written in simple language, with everything explained in basic terms. There's a pretty thorough kanazukai index in the back, and furigana are supplied in the text for pretty much all names and terms for the era, such as ukiyo-zoushi, Arai Hakuseki, shukuba, etc.

It might be helpful as a supplement to the books in English already recommended, where via the index and table of contents you could find the kanji for names and terms, basic explanations in Japanese, etc.

It's vol 15 of the Nihon no Jidai Shi Series, published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan, 2003. It's edited by Takano Toshihiko, a Japanese History Prof. at Gakushuin Daigaku, ISBN 4-642-00815-2, 325 plus pages. I got my copy from Amazon Japan online, and it's likely still available there.

Best Wishes,
