Edo influences on modern films

Mizoguchi's Chikamatsu Monogatari is an adaptation of a bunraku play where many of the gestures and movementss echo the stylistics of the puppet play. Tomu Uchida's Naniwa no Koi no Monogatari is also based on a Chikamatsu play and Chikamatsu himself appears as a character. The film moves between relatively realistic scenes and stylised sequences set on stage, with visual echoes of both bunraku and kabuki.
