Marebito is a term celrbated by fantastic ethnologist (my label) Orikuchi
Shinobu referring to what are literally "rare visitors" The term was
related etymologically and through folk histories to both beggars and
"imperial" visitors. I've been doing quite a bit of work in this area, so
please feel free to contact me off-list if you're interested. Orikuchi is a
fascinating scholar.
