The film critic, Komori Kazuko, affectionately known throughout Japan
as "Komori no obachama" died on the 8th at the age of 95. Komori was
originally a reporter for such women's magazines as Shufu no tomo when
Yodogawa Nagaharu, the critic and editor of Eiga no tomo, suggested she
try film criticism. That was in 1949. She wrote on film for decades,
especially Hollywood film, where she used her English skills to
interview and become friends with many Hollywood stars. She became a
national name when she hosted her own movie show on TV, coupling that
with many appearances on variety programs. Her shocking red hair,
colorful clothes, and eccentric speech mannerisms made her probably the
most famous film critic next to Yodogawa. Her books include one on
James Dean, and an autobiography, Nagareru mama ni, ai.
