Dear All,

The query below comes from an Emory Japanese Studies major who will be in
Japan this coming year.

I can help this student with reception theory and the like, but I know
little about films and popular media on the subjects that interest him. We
will both greatly appreciate any suggestions you can give him.

Thanks,
Matthew Bernstein

I am looking into the male homoeroticism in 'visual culture' in Japan, which
means the Music Industry, music videos, dramas, commercials, and movies.

I want to make a distinction between homoeroticism and homosexuality,
because both are different, and I want to see if maybe there is connection.
I aslo, in film, want to look at movies that portray it in an 'artistic'
sense, like the movie is an outlet for the director and also films that are
made because of the pop stars in them.

For example, in America, the film 'Crossroads' with Britney Spears and her
quest for musical stardom versus another movie with similar theme without
the 'pop idol' as the lead. I am also looking at contemporary Japanese
film, so from the late 90s onward.

What I really need is some direction with the film, especially theory
based. I am looking at fan reaction and intentions of the producers to make
these types of films. So any help that you can give will me much
appreciated
