Hello,

There is a new book on idol fandom that just came out from Harvard 
UP, by Hiroshi Aoyagi, called Island of Eight Million Smiles: Idol 
Performance and Symbolic Production in Contemporary Japan. About pop 
stars, not film (there's an extended chapter on Matsuda Seiko) but 
thought your student might find it helpful.
