The Council on East Asian Studies, the Department of East Asian 
Languages and Literatures, and the Film Studies Program of Yale 
University present

Japanese Film Director Aoyama Shinji

Combining genre cinema with a rigorous critique of postwar Japanese 
society, Aoyama Shinji is one of the leading figures of contemporary 
Japanese culture, directing award-winning films such as Eureka (which 
the Los Angeles Times said "will become one of the landmarks of the 
world cinema of the first decade of the 21st century"), writing 
prize-winning novels, and becoming an intellectual force with his 
criticism and theory. Yale University is pleased to have Aoyama visit 
for nearly two weeks to show four of his films, direct two weekend 
workshops, and participate in several discussions on Japanese film and 
culture.

American Premiere!
A Forest with No Name (Namae no nai mori, 2002)
The theatrical version of Aoyama's episode from the ambitious Mike Hama 
detective series.

Saturday, April 9

WiLd LIFe (1997)
Print courtesy of the Japan Foundation
Aoyama's third theatrical film about a punctilious ex-boxer in search 
of his missing boss.

Saturday, April 16

To the Alley (Roji e, 2001)
A documentary exploring the world of the novelist Nakagami Kenji using 
the film he left behind.

Followed by a symposium on Nakagami Kenji

Sunday, April 17

Lakeside Murder Case (2005)
Aoyama's most recent film about entrance exams, a not-so-normal family, 
and a murder.

WORKSHOPS

Aoyama, who both writes film theory and criticism and teaches at Tokyo 
University and the Film School of Tokyo, will hold two weekend 
workshops at Yale.

Aoyama Shinji in Readings in Japanese Film Theory
Aoyama will attend Asst. Prof. Aaron Gerow's seminar, Readings in 
Japanese Film Theory, to discuss his own work. Outside participants are 
welcome, but discussions will be in Japanese without translation.
