Intro and weighing in

Hi Everyone-

I'm Rob Schwartz, a new subscriber to the list. I'm a film journalist here
in Tokyo.

I'd like to weigh on the romanization issue. I agree fully with what Jason
is saying. It's one thing if a clueless person in a kokusai-bu or senden-bu
somewhere mistakes the romanization of someone's name (which I think we all
agree is not a good thing) but quite another if an artist chooses, and the
self-determination is key here, to romanize their name in a non-stardard
way. Mark Schilling's point about Joe Shishido is a perfect example. Artists
choose all the time how they want to present themselves to the world and
this is another case of that. Aaron's point that they then may actually get
filled as two different people is duly noted but I can't say it's persuasive
in the debate. Having said that I think we'd all like the industry to stick
to the standardized romanization in all other cases. Things like "shojyo"
drive me crazy as well.

Sore dewa, yoroshiku
