Workshop Announcement:
On April 28, there will be a workshop on Trans-Asian cinema at NYU?s East
Asian Studies department (715 Broadway 3rd Floor). The following is the list
of invited speakers and topics of their presentations:
--Jinsoo An (NYU): ?Whither South Korean Cinema?: Screen Quota Controversy
and Burden of Success?
--Jung-Bong Choi (NYU): ?The Seat of Culture: Neo-Liberalist State and
National-Regionalism in East Asia?
--Steve Chung (UC Irvine): ?Sin Sang-ok, East Asian Cinema, and Cold War
Cosmopolitanism?
--Phil Kaffen (NYU): ?Modernity and Its Discontents?
--Jean Ma (Bard College): ?Long Take Realism as ?Regional Style?: Between
National Brands and Global Traditions?
--Esther Yau (Occidental College): ?Chinese Cinema Narration?s Recent
Tropes: Language, Psychic Condition, Publics?
Since it?s a workshop, there will be no formal presentation of papers.
Instead, each speaker will talk on a specific topic informally, and all
participants will explore the questions of trans-Asian cinema (beyond the
national and the transnational) in an experimental fashion. I will send the
information on ?assigned readings? to those who would like to join us.
The event is open to the public, but because of the limited seating,
requires pre-registration. If you?re interested in participating in the
workshop, please drop me a note.
