That is a very interesting piece of information, re Ozu's Nagaya Shinshiroku, and I will pursue that. I did not know about that at all.
One film that came out around the same time as Kikujiro no natsu was Central Station, which also has some theme similarities. It seems to me that they were both being made at the same time, though, so it's not so likely that either borrowed anything from the other.
