The Yomiuri reports that Aoshima Yukio, the entertainer and former
governor of Tokyo, died this morning at the age of 74. Aoshima became a
comedy scriptwriter after graduating from Waseda, working mostly in TV.
It was his work for the comedy group the Crazy Cats, especially writing
the lyrics for many of their comic songs, that first made him famous.
He also appeared in many of their films and directed two movies of his
own: Kane (1966), which was shown at Cannes, and Futari de hitori
(1970). His major claim to fame, however, was when he entered politics
in 1968, getting elected first to the House of Councillors, and then
becoming the governor of Tokyo in 1995. His reformist stance earned him
considerable popularity among the citizenry.
