The Asahi just reported that the actress Kishida Kyoko died on the 17th
at the age of 76. Her father was the famous playwright Kishida Kunio
and she first became an actress at the Bungakuza, the theater troupe
her father founded, making her stage debut in 1950 (although she later
left the troupe in 1963 when she and other actors like Akutagawa
Hiroshi (son of Ryunosuke) disagreed with the policies of troupe
leaders like Sugimura Haruko). Her film debut was in 1956 and she is
most remembered, especially abroad, for her role as the "woman" in
Woman in the Dunes, although she appeared in many classic films
including Hakai, Sanma no aji, Watashi wa nisai, Shinobi no mono,
Guramato no yuwaku, Ototo, Tabi no omosa, Inugamike no ichizoku, and
Umi to dokuyaku. She appeared frequently on TV in both serious and
comedic roles and was also known for being the voice of Moomin in the
animated series and films.
