well, here in russia many people keep the same feeling from Audition :)
Miike is quite popular director here, especially from teenagers, students and other young 'intellectuals' of art-house/independent films. i'm a long time journalist and Japanese culture (especially experimental sound and movies) is a very special theme of my interests_ if you read in russian I can re-send you my article about 'strange' art of Takashi Miike (not about girls saws off... :-) I wrote a couple years ago here in media (sorry, I had not a special idea to translate it in English because the main idea of my essay was to give more first info and impressions about Miike for local audience and my readers_also some years ago I helped to my friends who have a cinema house here in my homeplace presented a first film of Miike here - "The city of lost souls" (earlier before it we had his films just only on TV - Audition and first part of DOA, but not on big screen); we presented that film for special first time festival of art-house films 'Art_ery' where also were presented later a works of Kitano, Nakata, Miyatsaki,
yes, One Missed Call and Three extremes also were here on big screen as well as one moscow company released on VHS/DVD Miike' "Katakuri...' Visitor Q', DOA-III', Izo', Gozu'... I'm very interested in all aspects of experimental art, so summer last year I created a special all night long open-air avantgard and experimental film festival with works of one of my favourite director Shinya Tsukamoto - as I know it was first free open presentation of Tsukamo films here (except "Snake of June" on TV some months ago)_ in February this year Moscow planing to finally make a big retrospective for Tsukamoto works - sorry for this off topic here
also about situation with Japanese films here, every year we have a special festival from Ambassy of Japan in Russia' archive_ classic films in general

ps. sorry for long off topic message_I'm here on the list long time already but much to my regret didn't have a possibility to present yourself and say you all Hello_ for me it's a big honour to be here_Aaron, Tom and all, sincerely thank you for your work and info and thoughts and comments here_and pls, sorry for my poor English :)

Audition has shown on SBS television in Australia, SBS is the free-to-air multicultural broadcaster in Australia. Their charter is to show foreign films catering to the many different language groups prevalent here - while also attracting more viewers in general; they regularly show Japanese films. I agree with Jim, next to Hideo Nakata's films, most people seem to know the film "where the girl saws off the guys leg..."

Miike appears to have a strong fan base here. His films either sell out or are well attended at the Melbourne Film Festival - which unfortunately is usually the only time you get to see a film print version. We usually get two films a year. 2005 - it was Izo and Three Extremes, 2004 - Graveyard of Honour and One Missed Call.

In the UK over the past 3-4 years it's been shown on digital/satellite subscription channels (Sky Movies, FilmFour), 'free' digital/satellite channels (Sci-Fi) and one of the five basic terrestrial channels. Next to Ring, it's probably the most widely shown of all the 'extreme' Asian films that have made it to television (and there are quite a few now). The fact that three separate 'networks' have picked it up is a testament to its popularity over here.
