zainichi

There is also a very interesting documentary by NUNOKAWA Tetsuro, one of
the founders of the Nihon Documentarist Union (NDU) called "Wado He-
Zaikan Hibakusha Mukoku No 26nen" (1971, 52 Min,)(I believe it was also
shown at Yamagata last year). It's about Zainichi victims of the atomic
bombs, who returned to Korea after the war, and whose suffering is not
acknowledged or compensated by either the Japanese or South Korean
government. It's fascinating for the ambivalent attitude towards Japan
displayed by the main characters- many of them were forced to to work in
Japan, but they still gather to sing old Japanese songs together.

Nunokawa and the NDU's work seems to be very interesting in general,
especially in how they went across borders very early, investigating
Japans past and present by going to Taiwan, Korea, and Palestine. He began
with documentaries on the student movement and workers strikes and then
moved continually outwards across national borders- practically the
opposite vector to Ogawa Shinsuke, who seemed to gravitate inwards more
and more, focusing on life in a small Japanese village.

It's a shame that so little is written about Nunokawa and the NDU's work;
I wonder what the reasons for this may be (possibly, foreign scholars
being more interested in the Japanese village themselves?). I myself
haven't seen enough of it to competently talk about it, but it definitely
seems worth a close look.
