I like the review in the February Sight and Sound. Here's the first paragraph:

"Arthur Golden's 1997 exotic-flavoured quire of chick lit _Memoirs of a Geisha_ is a readable but essentially trite page-turner with a lot of pseudo-literary Orientalist diction thrown in. ("I felt as a bird must feel when it has flown across the ocean and comes upon a creature that knows its nest" is just one typical example of its fortune-cookie style.) Predictably, the bestseller has now been turned into a watchable if torpid chick flick with similar but even less convincing pretensions. Its director Rob Marshall, following up on his debut _Chicago_, seems to be gunning to oust Joel Schumacher as the kitchiest sensibility to ever manage a budget in excess of $50 million."
