I was going to suggest Yamanaka's "Kochiyama Soshun" -- but "Million Ryo Pot"
would also be nice. I was also going to suggest Makino's "Oshidori
utagassen".

I just ran across a wonderful, completely neglected Naruse film "Haru no
mezame" starring a 16 year old Yoshiko Kuga and featuring a remarkably
relaxed (and charming) look at the life of rural high school kids (much more
impressive than Imai's later (and much better known) "Aoi sanmyaku". This
wasn't included in the recent retrospective -- so perhaps it hasn't been
subtitled.

Has Somai's "Ohikkoshi" been subtitled? (No subtitled version has ever been
available -- for home consumption). It's a wonderful film that should be much
better known.
