Dear Kine Japan members,
I'd like to announce a Japanese film screening series that will make
its debut at two U.S. venues in late September.
The series is called NO BORDERS, NO LIMITS: 1960s NIKKATSU ACTION
CINEMA, and is a slightly smaller selection of the films that
originally screened at the Far East Film Festival in Udine in 2005.
My company, Outcast Cinema, has been working with Mark Schilling (who
organized the Udine retro) and Nikkatsu Studios to put this series
together.
The eight films in the program are:
THE WARPED ONES / aka SEASON OF HEAT (Kyonetsu no kisetsu, 1960)
directed by Kurahara Koreyoshi & starring Kawachi Tamio
PLAINS WANDERER (Daisogen no wataridori, 1960)
directed by Saito Buichi & starring Kobayashi Akira
GLASS JOHNNY: LOOK LIKE A BEAST (Glass no Johnny: yaju no yo ni
miete, 1962)
directed by Kurahara Koreyoshi & starring Shishido Jo
RED HANDKERCHIEF (Akai hankachi, 1964)
directed by Masuda Toshio & starring Ishihara Yujiro
LIKE A SHOOTING STAR / aka THE VELVET HUSTLER (Kurenai no
nagareboshi, 1967)
directed by Masuda Toshio & starring Watari Tetsuya
A COLT IS MY PASSPORT(Colt wa ore no pasupoto, 1967)
directed by Nomura Takashi & starring Shishido Jo
GANGSTER VIP (Burai yori daikanbu, 1968)
directed by Masuda Toshio & starring Watari Tetsuya
ROUGHNECK (Arakure, 1969)
directed by Hasebe Yasuharu & starring Kobayashi Akira
Our first two screening venues will be Fantastic Fest in Austin,
Texas, and Japan Society in New York City.
Austin will be screening three films:

THE WARPED ONES / SEASON OF HEAT

Japan Society NY will be presenting the series as a one-per-month
film program, beginning with A COLT IS MY PASSPORT.

Mark Schilling will be introducing all three films in Austin and at
the first screening in NY, and will be signing copies of his new book
from FAB Press - coincidentally also titled NO BORDERS, NO LIMITS:
NIKKATSU ACTION CINEMA - at both venues.
The films will be screened on 35mm, but English subtitles will be
separately projected via a video projector.
I hope to tour this program to other cinematheques and venues in the
US and Canada. If other forum members have any leads or suggestions
about other places that might like to screen the films, or would like
to book the series for their own organization, I'd be happy to hear
from them.
Thanks,
Marc Walkow
