Further research reveals that Frenke may be dead after all. There is a
lively discussion going on about this at The Blackboard, a film noir board.
The 1993 *New York Times* obituary for actress Anna Sten, who had been
married to Frenke, contains this observation:

"A friend, William Hughes, an actor, said yesterday that her first marriage,
to a Russian-born film director, Fedor Ozep, ended in divorce, and that her
second husband, Eugene Frenke, a film director and producer to whom she was
married in the 1930's, died about five years ago."

Interestingly. Frenke's first production credit in 1931 was on a film that
Ozep co-directed and that Sten starred in (the German version of *The
Brothers Karamazov*). The IMDB has Sten and Ozep divorcing in 1931 and Sten
and Frenke marrying in 1932, so I detect a juicy behind-the-scenes story.
However, since I've wandered rather far off topic, I'll leave the matter
there.

Best,
Mark
