The pronoun "who/someone/somebody" can be read "dare", "tare" and "ta" in kunyomi (Japanese reading) and "sui" in onyomi (Sino-Japanese reading). While today it is most commonly read "dare", in some cases it is read "tare" or "ta" as in "ta ga tame ni". The Japanese title of Ernest Hemingways novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls" for instance is "Ta ga tame ni kane wa naru".

I'm wondering why this title isn't read as "Dare ga tame ni" (as my kanji 
dictionary would handle the character rendered as "ta")?  And while IMDB 
lists this as "Taga tameni" and I've also seen this rendered "Tagatameni" -- 
doesn't this actually containfour lexical units --  "Ta ga tame ni"?

And while we're on the film -- was anyone else a bit disappointed by this 
(given the quality of the cast)?
