there are two very usuful sources: 
1. the Film Yearbooks (Eiga nenkan) that list all films released in a
year.
2. The Kinema Junpo kessanban which also lists the films released that
year. A few years ago Kinema Junpo published a 3-volume "Best Ten
Zenshu" covering the years 1945-1959; 1960-1969 and 1970-1979
respectively, that in addition to the "Best of" rankings also feature
the film release lists.
