Don't mean to nitpick with the information on the Zootrope website, when it says "It is important to emphasize the fact that never had any of his films received a restriction of this sort in any of the countries where they have been seen." In fact, Violated Angels was refused a certificate in the 70s, although was allowed to screen in certain "film club" venues not beholden to the BBFC.
Still, it seems remarkable that a country that can produced the likes of Catherine Breillat and Gaspar Noe should suddenly become so prudish. Has film censorship in France become more strict in recent years, I wonder?
