This is just to say that, although I said 'over to the experts' (under the heading 'two Russian books'), about the Japanese cinema exhibition in Moscow in 1929, I'm taking it forward since no one has indicated they are picking it up.

To add to Roger Macy's fascinating discovery of the 1929 Russian catalogue of the exhibition about Japanese cinema, Eisenstein's "The Cinematographic Principle and the Ideogram" was first published in it as "Afterword."
It turns out that there were two distinct publications. The one I described does not have Eisenstein's Za kadrom, but there is another 91 page book, without the ambitious artwork, that does. Copies of both books exist both at the National Library of Russia and further west.
I'll contact the Russian Cinema Group here in London when I've done a bit more work.
