Hi,

I was quite overwhelmed by the interest many of you have shown my posting.
So in order to execute a preemptive strike to more individual mails asking
how one lays eyes on it, I just want to add that my dissertation on the 'Bad
Losers' is in course of publishing with Edwin Mellen Press. A 'sneak
preview' of some of my findings will be available later this fall in the
form of a video piece on Criterion's upcoming edition of Kurosawa's Drunken
Angel, which is being edited as I write these lines.

In response to Jonathan's mention of Fowler's Piss and Run-article, it was
actually that particular article that triggered my interest, and
subsequently sparked off my project. Great observation by Fowler that the
bedwetting orphan, Kohei ('Happy Peace'!), is peeing on the Stars & Stripes!
What Fowler does not mention is that the pee-stain has the distinct shape of
a mushroom cloud - savage and subversive satire brought to you by Ozu!

Dear All,

Bad losers sounds like a good story!

On a similar note, there is also Ted Fowler's article "Piss and Run: How
Ozu Does a Number on SCAP." It's an essay Dennis Washburn and Carole
Cavanaugh's Word and Image in Japanese Cinema. (2001).

It's an allegorical reading of postwar politics, not the Constitution per
se.

Hi,

You may find it worthwhile perusing my dissertation, 'The Little Victories
of the Bad Losers - Resistance against U.S. Occupation Reforms and Film
Censorship in the Films of Yasujiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa 1945-52' if you
are interested in how the implementation of the reorientation policies
sponsored by the Occupation (and 'their constitution') was thematized in
occupation films.

Best,
