My wife and I were also shocked this morning to get the news of
Sato's death. As Markus quite eloquently expressed it, it is was hard
to believe that such a kind, gentle and intelligent man could suffer
in that way. Gomeifuku o inorimasu.

Markus did a great job eulogizing Sato, but I wanted to add that one
thing that always impressed me about Sato was his dedication not only
to filmmaking, but also to teaching and studying film and
documentary. He was a teacher at university and at the Film School of
Tokyo, and published a number of books about film, particularly
documentary, including:

Nichijo to iu na no kagami: dokyumentari eiga no genkai (Gaifusha, 1997)
???????? : ????????????? / ??
??
   ?? : ???, 1997.10

Dokyumentari eiga no chihei: Sekai o hihanteki ni uketomeru tame ni
(2 vols.) (Gaifusha, 2001)

Eiga ga hajimaru tokoro (Gaifusha, 2002)

Dokyumentari no shujigaku (Misuzu shobo, 2006)

I hope that not only his films, but his books and students live long
as well.
