Call for Venue: The Japan Foundation Midwest Film Festival

To: All interested parties,

The Japan Foundation's New York office organizes an annual film series in
which Japanese films are screened at educational and cultural institutions
in the US. The goal of the series is to provide those curious or interested
in Japan with the opportunity to learn more about Japanese culture through
films. We would like to invite you to join our exciting film series in
2008. We especially welcome applications from universities and colleges.

We are currently planning on rotating the series in a round-robin format
among a group of four or five institutions in the Midwest during the early
part of the year between January 20 and March 20, 2008.

For the 2008 series the theme is "The Changing Scenery of Japan." For many
years, Japan has often been portrayed in films as a homogeneous, patriarchal
society whose citizens are serious and introverted. While there is some
truth to these stereotypes, Japan has significantly changed over the past
decades. There is more diversity now, people from different cultures
co-exist, girls and women are more independent, men embrace their feminine
sides, and traditional Japanese family values are not as widespread. We
have selected five films that depict these changes in Japanese society.
These films focus particularly on the powerful, uninhibited, and dynamic
youth who play a major role in changing the scenery of today's Japan.

The five selected films are:

"Linda Linda Linda" directed by YAMASHITA Nobuhiro/2005/114 min.

"We Shall Over Come Someday" directed by IZUTSU Kazuyuki/2004/119 min.

"All under the Moon" directed by SAI Yoichi/1993/109 min.

"Waterboys" directed by YAGUCHI Shinobu/2001/91min.

"Hanging Garden" directed by TOYODA Toshiaki/2005/113min.

All films will be in Japanese with English subtitles.

You may show ALL or some of these films at your venue. However, we
prioritize those who can show all five when we select venues.

Attached, please find "film synopsis" and the "General Conditions for the
Circulation of the Japan Foundation Film Series." "General Conditions"
outlines the responsibilities of both the host institution and the Japan
Foundation.

Please note that your university institution must have 35mm facilities on
premises to be considered.

If you would like to participate in this year's film series, please reply to
this message by September 28, 2007 to arrange screening dates for your
institution. Only four or five institutions will be chosen.

In your message, please include the below information.

Name of your organization and department (if applicable)

Contact information (name, email, telephone, fax, address)

You will be notified of the selection results by October 12.

Please feel free to forward this announcement to those who may be
interested.
